CLEAR AND LOW

The Trinity River is about as low as you are going to see it. It is flowing at 300 cfs with very little help from the tributaries. our last decent storm was the beginning of Oct. The water temp is around 40 degrees and the bite is slow, with most of our hook ups coming in the warmer afternoons with the bug activity.Rubber leg stones #10 and small PT’s #14 later in the afternoon. The Steelhead started showing a couple of weeks ago, and we are having some pretty good days with very little boat traffic. The weather has been in the 80′s the last few days which makes the afternoon bite a little tough, but where can you go to catch a steelhead in a t-shirt !!

The spring run of Chinook was very good this year, with a healthy fallow up of fall fish right now. I have never seen so many Jack’s in the river, I hope it is a good thing. The best news is we are seeing some early Steelhead mixed in. It should be a good season.

The river is back to it’s mandated summer flow of 450cfs, which it will hold until mid October.
The Spring run of Chinook Salmon looks to be the best in a few years, The fish are real bright. We are experiancing a large amount of Jacks this run. We went 6 for seven a couple of days ago landing only Jacks.

River finally down

The river is currently running at 750cfs and will drop to its summer flow of 450cfs in a few days for the balance of the summer. We are currently catching some nice spring run Salmon,German Browns, and a few summer run Steelhead in the 4-5lb Range. lewiston Lake is fishing well with Midges on the surface, and small leach patterns with slime lines.

The Trinity is up to 10,000 cfs peaking at 11,000 for 3 days tomarrow . I am heading to Mexico for a couple of weeks, I will give report on Lewiston Lake when I return.

River Flows High

The Fishing on NorCal rivers is going to be tough all over. The Trinity behind the house is running about 1800 cfs and pea green. It just starts to clear and the next storm arrives. The ground is so saturated that it blows out and doesn’t clear fast as usual. I have rescheduled my last 6 trips because of poor conditions. We are supposed to be getting several more storms with a break around the first of April. I can’t complain as the lake will probably fill this year. It looks as though they have released the annual smolts which will complicate things even more, I have seen Eagles and Ospreys with small fish indicating the release. (Hang in there things can only improve as long as we have water.)

Over all Steelheading has been a mixed bag, with fish spawning and very few fresh fish showing above Junction City. There are a few fresh fish staging between the north fork and Canyon Creek waiting for more water.Water temps are around 40 degrees so fishing is tough. The best news is the dry-fly activity has been real good between 12 and 2. We have been hooking a 2-4 fish a day on # 14-16 BWO patterns.

Steelheading slow

We are in the mid winter doldrums. The fish are spawning and we are starting to seeing some early downrunner’s as well as a few fresh winter run still showing. The bug hatches in the warm afternoons are starting to develop and fish are beginning to key on them, mostly BWO’s size 16-14. It is supposed to be nice for the next several days with no rain predicted, hopefully the bugs will continue to improve. I have heard reports that the Sac. around the posse grounds are producing some nice rainbows up to 3 pounds.

New Year

Boy!! we really have been blessed with a series of nice storms, the most rain in 10 years. It has made the fishing challenging with the high water, but we managed to scrape a couple out. The water is now on the fall with a week of nice clear weather. We are heading down river today to look for wild fish in the J.C. area. The water is finally low enough to fish down there, around a 1000 cfs. The creeks are running full and the wild fish will be staging around the Tributaries.
